I am not sure how Pocahontas connects to the LaForce lineage but I found it in the LaForce Tree. This line I just connected with leads to Pocahontas and Kocoum. It is sort of a stones throw aware from my LaForce lineage which does seem to have some names that connect to it. I have a small amount of Native American and African in my genetics and have been trying for a while to figure out whether it is connected to the Melungeons as I have several genetic relatives on 23 and Me that seem to have Melungeon names. 23 and Me has the Sizemores listed as a strongly connected name, yet I can find none of these names in my lines. Research I have done connects Pocahontas to the Green family which also has Sizemore connected probably thru the Bolling lines. It is possible that the connection I have with them is thru Pocahontas but not down the John Rolfe and Thomas Rolfe line, which is commonly known but thru this line with Kocoum. If this is the case then I may not see their lines or just haven't found the connecting name yet. Family stories have a known Great GGG Grandmother that was supposedly full blood Delaware but her picture looks admixed with Euro folks already although she is wearing a woven Native American shawl.

For more information on Pocahontus see:

Kocoum and Pocahontas, according to a Powhatan family genealogist had a child and someone has put this lineage together, I found it yesterday when I linked up to and existing line on the LDS FamilySearch.org site. If you have an account with them the website link is:

Kocoum Patawomeck and Amonute Matoaka "Pocahontas" Powhatan Empty Update on Pocahontus connection

Post by dfpv Wed Mar 30, 2016 3:18 pm

Thought I would update this information. The link to Family Search is not valid any longer, I did not realize at the time that these family lineages are constantly being remodeled, sometimes for the worst. The lineage that I referred to previously is still valid but what shows up now on that line in Family Search is probably the conventional line of official marriages which seems to be well documented. So the Pocahontas line has disappeared. I have since found the Sizemore lineage in my family tree, through my mothers real father whom we did not know much about. It is this blood grandfather that has connections to some of the Melungeons (Euro/American Indian/African mix), where some of the Melungeons married into the Sizemore line. The Sizemore's are technically not Melungeon but are related on the periphery. When I was reviewing some of the information yesterday, I saw that the Melungeon genetic testing that was done on this group with established lineages and known as Melungeon also had the name of 2 LaForce folks, Brenda LaForce and Everett LaForce. So this again looks like I have family lines that cross over each other which is not surprising as many of these people lived in the same area and knew each other.
The Pocahontus connection will have to be more thoroughly studied in the future. If you want the behind the scenes story of Pocahontas lineage from a Native American who came to the conclusion that he descended from Ka-Okee, thru the backdoor in the family lines and history, see:

    http://home.nps.gov/jame/learn/historyculture/upload/Patawomeck-Tides-2009.pdf

If you are interested in the Melungeons, see:

And for the partcipants of the Genetic Study of Melungeons roots which has LaForce names:

    Happy Searching,
    Debra
